Fourth Year Medical Student Elective

The Cook County Emergency Department offers four week clerkships for fourth year medical students interested in a career in Emergency Medicine and/or a residency at our institution. Applications will be accepted through the Visiting Student Learning Opportunities starting March 2, 2026. Contact Ms. Gina Wiley (gwiley@cookcountyhhs.org) with any questions.

Students are offered spots on a rolling basis. If you are selected, you will receive an email from VSLO with an offer. For those who do not receive an email from VSLO within 2 weeks of submitting your application then please rest assured that your application has been reviewed! While your status on VSLO will still say Under Review, all applicants who do not immediately receive an offer are placed on our waitlist. You will be notified if a spot becomes available.

Rotation highlights include 12 8-hour shifts in our busy urban emergency department, a didactic series specifically designed for the M4 student, and an invitation to our departmental conferences (M&M, etc) weekly. In addition to visiting students, Cook County is a site for a required M4 rotation for Rush Medical School. More information about the rotation can be found here.
