Residency Program Awards
Every year, Cook County EM honors individuals for their contributions to the residency program. These honors are awarded from votes by the residents and faculty. Descriptions of the individual awards and past winners are presented below.
Robert R. Simon Leadership Award
Each year the Emergency Medicine faculty selects one graduating resident who best exemplifies the principles and practice that Dr. Robert Simon exhibited during his tenure as the first chairman of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Cook County Hospital. Dr. Simon’s leadership skills were extraordinary during his seventeen years as chairman. His vision and hard work built the largest and strongest Emergency Medicine department in the country. His dedication and enthusiasm to train “Emergentologists” set the highest standards for emergency medicine practice. Dr. Simon defines Emergentologist as “a physician specializing in emergency medicine who can diagnose and initially manage any medical or surgical emergency in any organ system with the same quality and efficiency as someone who specializes in only one particular organ system.”
