Emergency Orthopedics
Our emergency orthopedics curriculum is led by Dr. Scott Sherman, the current author of Simon’s Emergency Orthopedics, the leading reference book for handling all types of musculoskeletal emergencies. Didactic, practical, and a dedicated orthopedic rotation during the PGY2 year led by our faculty aim to train residents to be proficient in the initial evaluation, management, and stabilization of orthopedic conditions. This includes but is not limited to joint dislocations, fractures, soft tissue injuries, infectious conditions, and rheumatologic diseases.

All residents will complete the emergency orthopedics rotation during their PGY2 year. However, lectures, splinting workshops, and other practical experiences are incorporated into the curriculum for spaced repetition learning.
During the PGY2 year emergency orthopedics rotation, residents see all of the orthopedic consults wherever they might occur (Red, Blue, or Green). You will also take consults for the Pediatric ED and Trauma unit. Residents will also meet with the ultrasound faculty for an introduction to MSK ultrasound and will attend US academic day once during rotation to present their scans.
The Emergency Department’s Green Pod (low-acuity/rapid track) is equipped with an orthopedics room, known as the Simon Room, to perform splinting, reductions, and fluoroscopy and procedural sedation if needed.
