EMS & Disaster Medicine

Our Emergency Medical Services (EMS) and Disaster Medicine faculty provide opportunities for residents to participate in medical oversight for a large urban EMS system, engage in disaster preparedness and large event medicine activities, and provide an avenue for academic scholarship in EMS and disaster-related projects. Our program provides experiences in EMS protocol development, provider education, and quality improvement, as well as participation in disaster drills focused on large-event medicine and disaster/scene response.

EMS & Disaster Medicine at county

Our residents participate in a dedicated EMS rotation during the PGY2 year, where they gain field experience as an EMS physician. While working with paramedics and EMTs, residents gain further insight into the practice of pre-hospital medicine and Chicago's EMS organization through ambulance ride-alongs and a visit to Chicago's 911 call center.

Additionally, PGY1 residents are trained within the first month of residency to answer and respond to EMS dispatch radio calls, allowing them to take these call while working shifts in the ED throughout the four years of training.

Led by our disaster medicine faculty, all residents complete Chemical, Biological, Radiation, Nuclear, & Explosive (CBRNE) training, FEMA Disaster Preparedness and Response training, and training with Illinois Medical Emergency Response Team (IMERT) leadership.

Residents also have annual opportunities to participate in pre-hospital event medicine at events around the city, such as the Chicago Marathon and Lollapalooza, among others.
